Lloyds Banking Group will close 123 UK branches by 2024 and cut around 1,600 jobs across its network as part of the shift to online banking.
The group, which owns Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, said just 8% of its customers choose to visit large branches as the only way to manage their money, while more than 21 million customers bank online or mobile to use.
A spokeswoman for Lloyds said: “As more customers choose to manage their day-to-day banking online, it is important that our people are available when it matters most. We’re introducing a number of new roles and making changes to our branch teams so our customers can see us how and when they want.”
The new teams aim to improve Lloyds’ service and ensure more customers can contact the bank without having to wait as often for an appointment.
Junior employees are not expected to be affected by the redundancies, and in some situations staff will be offered voluntary redundancy.
