What is okra water?

Okra water is a homemade concoction that can be made by soaking okra pods (the edible part of the plant) in water for several hours or overnight. The texture of the resulting drink is often described as slimy due to the mucilage, a gelatinous substance found in many plants, including okra.

Okra, also called lady’s finger, is native to Africa and is used in cuisines around the world, including the southern United States, where it is eaten breaded, fried or used in stews and gumbos. Although botanically a fruit due to its seeds, it is more commonly used as a vegetable.

Okra contains many beneficial antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. It is also high in fiber, which has a number of benefits, including improved digestion.
