Sofia Richie Grainge discusses her beauty evolution

Sofia Richie Grainge on her beauty evolutionSofia Richie Grainge for SkinCeuticals

Emblematic of the sartorial zeitgeist, Sofia Richie Grainge’s profile has exploded over the past twelve months, with many resonating with her ‘quiet luxury’ looks and ‘clean’ off-duty aesthetic, as much as the contemporary bridal glam she wore for her wedding to Elliott Grainge. This year, the model and entrepreneur’s world — and wardrobe — looks a little different as she prepares to welcome a child with her music producer husband. As every mother knows, hormones are obstacles. “There are so many things involved in pregnancy,” she says about the changes she experiences. “It’s definitely been intense.”

First, her acne and rosacea returned—”like I was back in high school,” but the skincare enthusiast relied on her dermatologist Dr. Mamina Turegano to determine the best strategy for her. “My first priority in my beauty routine right now is trying to get the healthiest skin possible. And making sure I have the right products to achieve that, whether it’s skincare or makeup,” she says. Richie Grainge herself has become a trusted voice for a new generation of skin-conscious audiences and has today been announced as SkinCeuticals’ new global brand partner, reflecting her evidence-based approach to skin care. (Of course, she’s strict about her routine and likes an at-home gadget instead of her regular laser facials – which can’t be performed during pregnancy).

But beyond her daily rituals, Richie Grainge is also keen to reflect on her beauty evolution – and what inspires her taste that has become so influential. Read all about the star’s beauty philosophy and product preferences below, as told exclusively to Bazaar:

On her beauty journey…

“I feel like everyone goes through quite an evolution in beauty from their teens to mid-twenties. You know, figuring out what their path is and what they’re comfortable with. I’ve tried everything from the heavy makeup looks to where I am now; Experimenting is important to find out where you feel comfortable. So yes, I have experimented a lot in my time to really feel confident in the beauty routine that I do now.”

On her teenage skin, the struggle returns during pregnancy…

“I really struggled with acne and rosacea in my teenage years, and when I found out I was pregnant, it felt like I was back in high school. I really didn’t expect it; There are so many things that come with pregnancy and I just didn’t take them into account. It’s definitely been intense.”

On her current beauty priorities…

“I definitely had to turn around. My first priority in my beauty routine right now is trying to have the healthiest skin possible. And making sure I have the right products to achieve that, whether it’s skin care or makeup.

“I adhere to a very strict regime. My dermatologist prescribed me the Simply Clean Cleanser from SkinCeuticals, which is great at removing oil and makeup efficiently. During pregnancy I started overproducing oil and that cleanser really helped me control and manage my oil production. Everything is so intense and sensitive right now, so at night I use a light moisturizer because I don’t want to clog my pores.

“In the morning I use the SkinCeuticals Advanced Brightening UV Defense SPF 50. When I found out I was pregnant, my doctor said, ‘Don’t lie in the sun because you have to be careful with hyperpigmentation.’ There are so many things you have to take into account!”

On the laser device that changed her skin…

“I discovered a tool that has drastically changed my skin, the Lyma laser. My makeup artist Emily Cheng recommended it when I was in dire straits during my first trimester, when my hormones were going crazy. I use it every night before I go to bed. I have no association with the brand, but it has truly changed my life – it has been a game-changer for managing acne and redness.

“Normally, before I was pregnant, I would do a treatment called Laser Genesis once a month, which really helps kill bacteria on the skin and has really helped me with breakouts. Now Lyma is the only laser I can do myself – and it is not harmful during pregnancy.”

On her signature beauty look…

“I try to go for clean skin if I can, and by that I mean that the foundation is not too heavy. I like a contoured, bronzed look with a simple bronzed eye.

“I’m really into blush at the moment and love Chanel’s powder blush in very bright pink. I still use the Nudestix contour stick – it’s just undeniably good. And the Prada Foundation is really nice. I don’t normally wear foundation, but since I need more coverage when my skin breaks out, I used this because the finish still looks like skin, but provides some coverage.

“I always have to have an eyebrow gel with me wherever I go. I use the Anastasia which is almost like a mascara. And right now I always have tissue paper with me; I prefer that to constantly using powder on my face.

“I color my hair, so I also try to do as many masks and oil treatments as possible when I’m free. It suits my sleek bun perfectly – I make it all seem a bit intentional, but in reality I’m just a greasy mess!”

On what inspires her beauty taste…

“I feel really connected to European style and to France in particular – that kind of effortless ‘less is more’ approach. I Pinterest a lot and follow fun influencers and pick up things that I feel are connected to me. But my husband has also inspired me a lot, which is interesting. When we started dating he said ‘you’re so beautiful, you don’t have to do so much or wear so much makeup’ and I think it really boosted my confidence in that way. So I’m really trying to embrace myself, I guess.

About sharing tutorials on TikTok…

“I started my TikTok so I could connect with people and learn from people. I’ve learned so many beauty tricks just from watching TikToks. Plus, very few of my friends knew I was pregnant for the first five months, so it was great to be able to type “11 weeks pregnant” and see others talking about their symptoms. That’s why I use these platforms; relate to someone.

“If I ever feel like there’s judgment involved, I just won’t do it. I want to have fun with social media – I try to be myself; I’m honest. So if I ever feel like it makes me uncomfortable, I just don’t do it.”

When she feels most beautiful…

“I feel most beautiful when I get a lot of sunlight: spending time in the ocean and getting vitamin D from the sun.

“But also if I stick to a routine that makes me feel good, combining exercise, nutrition and hydration, but also skin care and hair care. You know, beauty really starts with taking care of yourself. That is definitely something I will pass on to my daughter.”
