Apple’s Vision Pro headset, a brave new world for computing

I took two test drives of the tech giant’s just-launched $3,499 futuristic ‘spatial computing’ headset – and I was thoroughly impressed

Here’s a confession: For the past seven months, I’ve been a little obsessed with a pixelated, virtual butterfly. More about that later.

This whole butterfly thing started last June when I traveled to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. I was invited to test drive the new Vision Pro, a wearable headset that combines the physical world with a stunningly lush digital universe, projected onto two postage stamps. displays with a higher resolution than a 4K TV.

Vision Pro is Apple’s first foray into what company CEO Tim Cook calls “spatial computing,” which the tech giant hopes will change the way we work on daily productivity tasks, communicate with each other and enjoy movies, games and memories – in the form of videos. and photos – in a whole new way.

To describe my experience with this device as mind-boggling is pretty much worth it, but it still falls woefully short.

The Vision Pro looks like an old-fashioned ski goggles, weighs about one and a half kilos and is equipped with 23 sensors, including a dozen cameras and six microphones that track eye movements, hand gestures and voices and simultaneously detect objects. located around you.

According to Apple, images are streamed to the screens eight times faster than a human eye can blink. The strap that holds the device on your head contains an array of speakers that deliver sound (what they call spatial audio) so that everything you hear matches the acoustics of the virtual environment you’re immersed in.

To be honest, I didn’t expect much when I first got the chance to try it out. Over the years I’ve strapped a few other of these headsets to my head – and each time I came away feeling nauseous, headachey and disappointed. If this was the future of computing, I wouldn’t be impressed.

But from the moment I put on Apple’s new device and found myself staring at the two tiny 23 million-pixel displays, I quickly found myself fighting a losing battle to keep my jaw from dropping open and saying, “Oh wow! . . Wow!. . . Ohhh!. . . Not really!”

<button class=The story continues

I knew that none of the images presented before my eyes were an actual flesh and blood reality, but after a few seconds I didn’t care. I felt myself being carried away by what I was looking at. I had a bona fide experience that was richer and light years beyond what it feels like to stare at and interact with files, words, and images on my MacBook Air.
