A first Tyne-Wear derby since 2016 and the first time Sunderland have been withdrawn to play Newcastle in the FA Cup since the quarter-final defeat in 1956 was the pick for the third round of the 2023-2024 tournament. Eddie Howe’s side, fifth in the Premier League, will travel to the Stadium of Light to take on their Championship neighbors on the weekend of January 5-8.

Arsenal, who have won the cup a record 14 times, take on Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium to reminisce about the 1971 double and Michael Owen’s phenomenal late strike 30 years later.

Manchester City will take on Huddersfield Town, a team they beat 10-1 in 1987 when both were playing second tier, while last season’s runners-up Manchester United will take on 2013 winners Wigan Athletic of League One.

In the three other Premier League matches, Tottenham Hotspur will host Burnley, Crystal Palace will play at home against Everton and Brentford will take on Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Which matches are on TV?

BBC and ITV share coverage. ITV has a first choice and a fourth choice for the second round, fourth round and quarter-final matches, as well as a second and third choice for the first, third and fifth rounds and a second choice for the semi-finals.

So the BBC has the choice between a Tyne-Wear derby or Arsenal versus Liverpool. Hopefully Alan Shearer will weigh in on that decision.

Preview: Hope arises

Good afternoon. Eternal hope arises on the day of the FA Cup third round draw for the supporters of the 44 Premier League and Championship clubs and the survivors of the preliminary round and the first two ‘real’ rounds who made it this far , even though some still have replays or delayed tapes to get through. But it doesn’t matter, as long as your name is in the hat* you can sing, like the late Terry Venables, a winner in 1967 on the field and 1991 on those old open red Wembley benches, and drop off Elvis’ civil rights classic to to make something much parochial out of it: a ‘dream’.

Well, when I say dream, I mean you can if you are a fan of Manchester City, United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea who have won 25 of the last 28, and even then not if you are a trophy snob in the Comes close it was something of an inconvenience until the semi-finals. Too many mid-tier Premier League and top-flight clubs have adopted a dismissive and cowardly approach to the competition and their managers insist that the league is their bread and butter and that they cannot afford the luxury of a cup. -perform distraction. But surely distraction is a good thing – the poor man’s version of sunbathing in the Caribbean, away from the daily struggle for survival? The Cup should matter to potential champions, also-rans and anyone on skid row precisely because it doesn’t matter and offers a rare opportunity to play without a millstone around their neck. Respect the cup and people will respect you.
