Designers and celebrities aren’t the only trendsetters; Movies and television shows have created many fashion trends: take it from this year’s Golden Globe nominees.

After breaking box office records, ‘Barbie’ tops the list with 10 nominations, while hit dramas like ‘Succession’ and ‘The Crown’ captured several television categories with nine and four nods, respectively. Some of the biggest trends on screen have also translated to the real world, with Barbiecore making its mark on fashion, beauty and quiet luxury, allowing people of all classes to channel the Roy family’s penchant for minimalist clothing.

After Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie were first spotted filming “Barbie” in Los Angeles, Barbiecore took the internet (and of course the fashion world) by storm for a full year before hitting theaters. The all-pink aesthetic, inspired by Mattel’s beloved doll, emphasizes bold femininity. Sky-high platforms, heart-shaped purses and matching sets are all top-level Barbiecore; The trend was even seen on the catwalks of Valentino, Chanel and Versace.

Searches on TikTok and Google for all things Barbiecore peaked in 2022 and 2023, with several brands including Zara, Crocs and Nyx launching Barbie-themed collaborations tied to the film’s release. During the ‘Barbie’ press tour, Robbie took the trend to new heights by channeling some of the doll’s iconic looks, all curated by stylist Andrew Mukamal.

“Barbie” is one of this year’s top Golden Globe nominees. The film received a total of 10 awards, including Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Director (Film) for Greta Gerwig and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for Robbie.

“Succession”

“Succession” may have taken its final bow this year, but the devious characters’ trends are proving timeless. Quiet luxury, also known as stealth wealth, replaces ostentatious displays with subtle, high-end basics, avoiding flashy accents and logo prints sometimes associated with the wealthy.

The wardrobes of Shiv, Logan and the rest of the Roy brood put this minimalist trend back on the map after it had a major moment in the ’90s. Google searches for “quiet luxury,” “stealth wealth” and “old money style” increased after the season four premiere of the HBO drama. It was also replicated in 2023 by labels such as Fendi, Christian Dior and Armani Privè.

“Succession” has been nominated for nine Golden Globes, including Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for Sarah Snook.

“The crown”

The late Princess of Wales has been a constant source of sartorial inspiration, so it’s no surprise that Diana’s fashion saw a major revival following Elizabeth Debicki’s portrayal in ‘The Crown’.

Sportswear store Mitchell & Ness has recreated a Philadelphia Eagles jacket worn by Diana in the ’80s and ’90s. The already sold out bomber, priced at $400, is now being resold for double the original price. A version of the jacket signed by Kylie Kelce, wife of Eagles center Jason Kelce, even fetched $100,000 at auction in November.

In promotional photos for the final season of “The Crown,” Debicki was pictured in a teal one-piece swimsuit reminiscent of the one Diana wore in 1997. According to Google, searches for “one-piece swimsuit” increased in the weeks following the show’s premiere. Meanwhile, searches for “blue swimsuits” saw a nearly tenfold increase in traffic.

“The Crown” scored four Golden Globe nominations, including Best Television Series (Drama) and Best Supporting Actress (Television) for Debicki.

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour”

Leave it to Taylor Swift to make friendship bracelets cool again. The trend refers to a lyric from one of her songs: ‘You’re on Your Own, Kid’.

Swift’s worldwide ‘Eras Tour’ had fans getting crafty and stringing together beaded bracelets, which were usually swapped between ‘Swifties’ at shows. This concert tradition expanded to theaters when “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” made its big-screen debut. The documentary has been nominated in one of the Golden Globes’ newest categories, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

“The Color Purple”

The title of the film says it all: the reboot of “The Color Purple”, coming out this Christmas, has already spawned a craze for violet shades thanks to producer Oprah Winfrey. “Okay, you all saw the trailer and I’m giving you six months to put your outfit together for opening day,” Winfrey said in an Instagram video earlier this year. “Anything purple.”

Several designers, including Prabal Gurung, Altuzarra and LaQuan Smith, joined in on the purple trend this year, sending lilac, lavender and mauve shades down the runway. The trend has also taken off on the red carpet, with several stars following Winfrey’s guidelines at the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles.

“The Color Purple” is nominated for two Golden Globes, with Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Supporting Actress (Movie), respectively.

“Air” may not have replicated the box office success of 2023 blockbusters like “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer,” but it was praised by critics for its depiction of Nike’s rise following the release of the Air Jordan sneaker.

The high-tops had already gained a following long before the release of “Air,” but an uptick in Jordan sales this year could be partly correlated with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s latest collaboration. Nike released its year-end financial statistics in September, showing that Air Jordans were responsible for 12.9 percent of the brand’s sales in 2023: that’s a total of more than $6.5 billion in revenue.

“Air” is up for two Golden Globes, namely Best Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) for Damon.
