The Three Lions have been hit by an injury crisis in what is their penultimate match before Southgate names his training squad for this summer’s European Championships, with captain Harry Kane and winger Bukayo Saka among those who will play no part against Brazil tonight.
That could open up opportunities for several names on the fringes of Southgate’s plans to take their case to Germany. England boss Gareth Southgate says he will not speak to interested parties until after Euro 2024 and called speculation about a link between him and Manchester United “completely disrespectful” to Erik ten Hag.
This summer could be the 53-year-old’s fourth and final tournament in charge of the national team as his contract with the Football Association expires in December.
Southgate says contract talks are on the back burner as he focuses solely on glory in Germany, but the background noise surfaced this week after reports of Manchester United’s potential interest.
“I think from my point of view there are two things,” Southgate said. “One is that I am the England manager. I actually have one task: to try to realize a European championship. It is clear that two important matches will take place this week.
“And the second thing is that Manchester United has a manager and I think it is always completely disrespectful when there is speculation about a possible manager. I am chairman of the LMA, so I don’t really have time for that kind of thing.”
