Britain’s current cold snap has brought another night of frigid temperatures – and the “cold plunge of Arctic air” will bring snow to some parts of the country.
Near-record low temperatures were experienced overnight, with the mercury dropping to -13°C in Glen Ogle, central Scotland, while -11°C was recorded at Tulloch Bridge in the Scottish Highlands, according to the Met Office. Forecasters had predicted that some snow-covered parts of Scotland could reach -15 degrees Celsius overnight, which would have been the coldest January night for 14 years.
Maps from the Met Office show more snow and freezing temperatures are on the way for northern areas, caused by Arctic air moving south across the country in recent days – leaving temperatures 5 to 6 degrees Celsius lower than normal for this time of year. The forecaster warned that “potentially disruptive” stormy weather will follow the current cold snap over the weekend.
The Met Office also issued an amber weather warning for snow in parts of Scotland on Wednesday, as well as a yellow warning for snow and ice in northern England, west Wales and parts of south-west England. The yellow warning, which covers the whole of Scotland and northern England, states that snow and ice ‘may lead to difficult travel conditions’, with the warning extending for the east coast of England, west Wales and the south-west coast until Thursday.
Watch: Snow and ice hit parts of Britain as cold snap continues
Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice apply across Scotland, much of northern England and parts of north Wales until Thursday. Afterwards, milder temperatures are forecast, along with wind and rain. More than 40cm of snow was recorded on high ground in north-west Scotland by the end of Friday, with snow continuing to build over the coming days, the Met Office said.
The Met Office said a few snow showers could hit the far south of Britain on Wednesday, with a “slim chance” of snow in the southern counties. The weekend will be milder, but westerly weather will bring wind and rain – and the possibility of more weather warnings as the snow melts.
