Predictions for the last 16 of the Europa League: Liverpool and West Ham advance, Brighton lose

Liverpool should have too much firepower for Sparta Prague – Reuters/Andrew Boyers

Liverpool were drawn against Sparta Prague in the last 16 of the Europa League, while Brighton face another tough test in their first season in Europe with a draw against Roma.

West Ham will again face their group opponents Freiburg, while Rangers will face Benfica.

All four British teams have the advantage of playing their second matches at home, thanks to being top of their group.

They travel to play their first legs on March 7, while the second legs will be played a week later on March 14.

Freiburg vs West Ham

After facing each other in the group stages, West Ham will be confident of reaching the quarter-finals after home and away wins before Christmas. Nayef Aguerd headed in the winner at the Europa-Park Stadium in October before they finished 2-0 at the London Stadium thanks to goals from Mohammed Kudus and Edson Alvarez. The difference, however, was that David Moyes’ side were in good form in the first half of the season, but are currently in a run of eight games without a win. The Germans’ attack will be led by experienced Italian international Vincenzo Grifo, 30, who is their top scorer in all competitions this season.
Winners: West Ham

Roma vs Brighton

The Italians sacked Jose Mourinho last month, reflecting their season. But they are finalists from last season and have a pedigree in the league. They also have a team with Romelu Lukaku, Paulo Dybala and Lorenzo Pellegrini, who are match winners against every opponent. The appointment of Daniele De Rossi has led to a run of wins to help them go into the match in good form, while Brighton have run hot and cold of late under Roberto De Zerbi. They scored fourteen goals in recent wins against Sheffield United (twice) and Crystal Palace, but also lost 4-0 to Luton.
Winners: Rome

Sparta Prague vs Liverpool

The Czech champions started the season in the Champions League but were eliminated in the play-off stages, although they were not defeated outright and went out on away goals to Copenhagen, who went on to beat Manchester United. In their Europa League group they finished second to Real Betis and behind Rangers, with whom they drew at home and lost away. However, Liverpool will not fear any team in their current form and their only problem is juggling fixtures and getting players fit again. They have managed to avoid the tougher encounters in the last sixteen stage and it will be a disappointment if they do not progress further.
Winners: Liverpool

What will the teams think?

Liverpool and West Ham will be happy to have avoided the more dangerous-looking sides, but Brighton have once again been given a very difficult task after going through a group that included Marseille, Ajax and AEK Athens.

Roma are one of the sides with the richest pedigrees left in the tournament, and some parts of their traveling support will worry Sussex Police.

Rangers face a big test against a legendary club in Benfica, but the Glasgow side are looking to rise to the occasion.

Everyone will be relieved to have avoided in-form Leverkusen and the long journey to Qarabag (Azerbaijan).

West Ham, last year’s Europa Conference League winners, won Group A ahead of Freiburg thanks to five wins and just one defeat.

Four British teams qualified

Four British teams will learn their opponents for the last 16 of the Europa League today when the draw takes place in Nyon, Switzerland.

Liverpool, Brighton, West Ham and Rangers all qualified after topping their groups.

This means that they will be away for the first leg on Thursday, March 7, and will be home for the second leg on March 14.

The draw starts at 11am UK time, although we can no doubt expect quite a bit of preamble before the balls are picked.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, will take part in the Europa Conference League draw, which will take place later, from the afternoon.
