A happy side effect of living in what many consider a golden age of television (apart from, well, all good television) is that fashion is capitalized F is not only welcome, but expected on the Emmys red carpet. And tonight, the postponed TV awards ceremony brought more than enough glitz and glamor to our small screens.
The bear‘s Ayo Edebiri continued to prove she’s the breakout style star of the moment, wearing a custom 3D printed Louis Vuitton dress. Suki Waterhouse followed in Rihanna’s footsteps with a red Valentino cutout dress that put her baby bump on full display (tied in a bow!). And Jessica Chastain had us crossing our fingers and toes that Sabato De Sarno’s Gucci brings more fabulous bright green dresses to every red carpet.

Ayo Edebiri in custom Louis Vuitton
When Laverne Cox asked Emmy And Golden Globe winner Ayo Edebiri, if she had dreamed of a night like this as a little girl, then… Bottoms actor responded in a way only she would, “I didn’t do that!” I dreamed of dentistry [insurance]!” But sometimes you get dental coverage and a custom Louis Vuitton dress, which she certainly admits the dream.

But tonight there was Laverne Cox, whose SS 1989 Mugler dress was pulled from her own closet. The mermaid dress is inspired by the lost city of Atlantis, and there really is no one better suited to resemble a real-life ancient sea god than Cox.
Aubrey Plaza in Loewe
It feels like Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe recently took over the red carpet. And tonight, Aubrey Plaza continued the brand’s awards season streak with a runway look from the house’s most recent Spring 2024 show. With a pin cutting through the dress’s top fold of butter-yellow fabric, Plaza looked as decadent as a piece of Rodolphe Le Meunier. Anderson always manages to create beauty with a playful twist, which is why his designs feel truly alive in a way that most red carpet dresses don’t. Maybe it’s time for them to take a trip to the next season of The White Lotus.
Claire Danes in Balmain
Just when we think we’ve reached the peak of Barbie-pink fatigue, along comes the Fleishman is in trouble star emerges in a pink vintage Balmain. With a draped, cross-back and jeweled buckles at the shoulders, the look feels particularly heavenly and very Claire Danes.
Jessica Chastain in custom Gucci
First there was Taylor Swift’s metallic green Gucci dress for the Golden Globes, and now we have Jessica Chastain’s bright green Gucci dress with fringe details for the Emmys. Hopefully Sabato De Sarno’s vision for the house includes more of these sassy green dresses. They feel like a very welcome jolt of color on the red carpet, a place where most stars play it a little safer when it comes to their palette.
Suki Waterhouse in Valentino
Rihanna said ‘Free the bump’ and maternity style has never been the same since. Suki Waterhouse put her pregnancy on full display with a cut-out Valentino dress from the runway, slightly altered to accommodate her plus-one. She also had a bow in the middle of her waist: TikTok’s current favorite trend will live on for another day. One day in 20 years, Waterhouse’s child will be able to conquer the internet by captioning this photo: “This is me, if you even care,” while the bows will no doubt make a reappearance when the trend returns.
Jenna Ortega in Dior
Wednesday Addams would never wear a sheer Dior hoop skirt dress with pastel floral embellishments, but we’re glad Jenna Ortega did. The tea-length look is a graceful delight that feels lighter than she normally goes for, yet still suits the actor completely.

Of course, there’s always room for a look at Wednesday Addams would approve, especially if the archive is Yohji Yamamoto. The Fleishman is in trouble The star wore a 1999 floor-length Yamamoto dress with sheer detailing at the bust. It also looked like something a grown-up Janis Ian would definitely wear — fitting, considering that on the Emmys red carpet, Caplan said Entertainment tonight she is very much “Janis Forever.”
Natasha Lyonne in Schiaparelli
The Poker face star continues to wear Schiaparelli on the red carpet, and so we have to keep adding her to these best-dressed lists. At the Golden Globes last week, she went more sculptural; tonight she opted for a figure-hugging metallic dress from the SS24 collection with bra cone cup details. The look, which looks like a glove on her body, is as effortlessly cool as she is – no easy feat.
Riley Keough in Chanel couture
Riley Keough brought the bow trend to the red carpet in a more subtle way than she did Daisy Jones & The Six costar Waterhouse, with a ribbon in her updo, instead of tying it around her waist. But there was nothing understated about her Chanel couture dress, which consisted of a set of shorts in a modern print under a flowing, sheer black dress. No one makes shorts like Virginie Viard, and Keough makes them look elevated and extremely cool. But hey, what else can you expect when the granddaughter of a rock star plays a rock star?
Marla Gibbs
At 92, Dame Marla Gibbs looked like a vampire vision in a glittering black dress with sleeves that had their own marks, as well as a bejeweled collar and shoulder cutout. The only thing more iconic than her looks is her decades-long career. As the five-time Emmy nominee said during a presentation with Quinta Brunson, “Black don’t crack!”
