World Health Day 20 -Freshangle News

As we commemorate World Health Day 2024 with the theme ‘My Health, My Right’, emphasis is placed on the critical importance of good diet and nutrition, especially in regions such as Central and West Africa.

Nutrition is the foundation of human health and influences every aspect of physical, cognitive and emotional well-being. In these regions, where socio-economic differences, environmental challenges and diverse cultural norms converge, the importance of good nutrition becomes even more apparent.

That is why multinationals like Nestlé advocate through their brands for affordable and good food for families while ensuring the sustainable sourcing of raw materials such as coffee, cocoa and soy in their supply chain.

“Nestlé reaffirms its commitment to promoting quality and affordable food, especially in Central and West Africa. We believe that access to a balanced diet, rich in essential nutrients, is essential for maintaining optimal health and wellbeing. Together, we strive for a future where everyone has access to nutritious diets, not only ensuring physical health but also promoting local communities and prosperous societies,” said Mauricio Alarcón, CEO of Nestlé Central and West Africa.

Health Foundation

Numerous health problems persist in Central and West Africa, ranging from persistent malnutrition to the increasing incidence of diet-related non-communicable diseases. These nutritional deficiencies not only hinder physical growth and development, but also weaken immune function, cognitive skills and general resistance to disease.

Essential nutrients found in a balanced diet, including vitamins, minerals, proteins, carbohydrates and fats, are the building blocks of health. Ensuring adequate nutrition during critical life stages, such as pregnancy, infancy and early childhood, is critical for optimal growth, development and long-term health outcomes.

Preventing non-communicable diseases

In recent years, Africa has seen an increase in the number of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and obesity. This increase reflects global trends, but is amplified by unique regional dynamics. Although infectious diseases are still significant, lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity are responsible for much of this burden.

A balanced diet is paramount in promoting overall health and preventing chronic diseases. A balanced diet includes a wide variety of nutrient-dense foods from all food groups, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats. This nutritional approach not only supports physical well-being, but also aids in weight management and reduces the risk of obesity and associated health problems.

Access to a varied and balanced diet, rich in essential nutrients, is not only a basic human need, but also a prerequisite for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health, well-being and poverty reduction.

Strengthening communities through education

Strengthening communities through nutrition education is a powerful tool in the fight against malnutrition. Providing knowledge about healthy eating habits and balanced nutrition through initiatives in schools, community centers and health care facilities can help dispel myths and empower people to make informed dietary choices.

Fortified Essentials for balanced nutrition

Some companies, such as Nestlé, recognize the importance of nutrition and quality in their product offerings. For example, Nestlé’s R&D center in Ivory Coast employs scientists and food technologists dedicated to developing affordable food solutions for the region. They take local dietary preferences and nutritional needs into account and integrate regionally produced grains and plant-based protein sources into formulations. These products are enriched with essential micronutrients such as iron, iodine, zinc and other vitamins and minerals, ensuring optimal nutritional value.

In addition, these experts have access to Nestlé’s global network of experts, advanced analytical equipment, laboratories and pilot plants at all of the company’s R&D sites.

Products like Maggi, widely recognized across the continent, are enriched with essential micronutrients such as iron and iodine, meeting local preferences while increasing nutritional intake. Likewise, Cerelac, enriched with iron, and Nido, enriched with calcium, provide essential nutrients essential for the growth and development of children.

In Nigeria, the company recently introduced Nido Milk & Soya, a product containing locally produced soybeans. This initiative provides a budget-friendly option for nutritious consumption while providing healthy food to consumers.

Harnessing the power of collaboration

The path to improved nutrition in Central and West Africa requires collaborative efforts across sectors and stakeholders. By working together with governments, civil society organizations, academia and the private sector, we can combine resources, expertise and innovations to drive meaningful change in the region.

Nestlé reaffirms its commitment to being a force for good by addressing the root causes of malnutrition, advocating for food security policies and empowering individuals and communities with knowledge and resources for informed nutritional choices. In the long term, this creates a future where everyone experiences the highest standard of health and well-being.
